During the brief taxi ride to her own house, Laurel stared out at the passing city scenery as the car sped uptown. Tonight’s events had put everything in sharp focus for her. Now she knew with indisputable clarity what she had to do. Phillip’s life depended on it. The welfare of his wife and children hung in the balance. However impossible the idea of accepting Connor’s proposal seemed to her, she simply had to grit her teeth and bear it. What other choice could she make, knowing what she knew now about Phillip’s desperate state of mind?

She’d have to call Connor first thing tomorrow morning—or maybe even tonight, if it wasn’t too late—and talk over the terms of their agreement. If he was going to make such an outrageous demand of her, then she should be able to spell out some terms of her own, she reasoned.

In her distracted state, Laurel paid the driver and strode toward her building without taking notice of the figure who stood in the shadows near her doorway. He moved toward her, blocking her path to the apartment entrance, and Laurel suddenly looked up in surprise and gave out a startled sound.

It was Connor. He’d been standing out in the cold, waiting for her. From the looks of his wind-tossed hair and ruddy cheeks, he’d been waiting a long time.

“What are you doing here?” she said.

“Now, there’s a greeting to warm a man’s heart,” he replied wryly. “Waiting for you, of course.”

Despite her abrupt comment, Laurel noticed that he still looked pleased to see her. And awfully handsome. She had the urge to smooth back his tousled hair and run her hand along his lean cheeks with their inviting five o’clock shadow. Why did he have to look so darned good all the time—like some smooth, seductive advertisement for masculine appeal? she silently ranted.

“Well, aren’t you going to invite me up?” he asked, breaking into her thoughts.

“Uh—no,” she replied in a definite tone. Seclusion with Connor in her apartment seemed like an awfully bad idea. Especially since she planned on accepting his proposal. He might get the entirely wrong idea, and Laurel knew in her heart that if he tried to kiss her again, she didn’t have the energy—or the will-power—to resist him.

“I really need to speak with you, Laurel. I won’t take very much of your time.”

“I want to speak with you, too,” she replied. She noticed his thick eyebrows rise in a curious reaction. But he didn’t ask her any questions. “There’s a café around the corner. It’s very casual and quiet. It’d be a good place to talk, I think,” she suggested.

“Sounds perfect. Lead the way,” he replied graciously.

It only took a few minutes to walk to the café and Laurel didn’t feel the need to make small talk. As Connor fell into step beside her, she had a curious sensation. Once the feeling of walking beside him had been so natural, as much a part of her life as breathing. Now
